Guided Walking Tour to visit Medieval Rome

Medieval Rome Visit three magnificently preserved medieval churches in Rome. This three hour private walking tour will take you to church of Santi Quattro Coronati. Tradition holds the first church was begun by Pope Miltiades, in the 4th century on the Coelian Hill. One of the first churches of Rome, it bore the Titulus Aemilianae from the name of the founder, who probably owned the elaborate Roman villa, whose structure is evident under the church. The church was completed at the end of the 6th century, and because of its proximity to the medieval papal residence of the Lateran Palace, it became prominent in its day. You will also visit the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Thi is the church that holds “The Mouth of Truth” and was built in the 8th century during the Byzantine Papacy over the remains of the Templum Herculis Pompeiani in the Forum Boarium and of the Statio annonae, one of the food distribution centers of ancient Rome. During your tour you will visit the Basilica of Saint Sabina on the Aventine Hill in Rome. This a titular minor basilica built in the 5th century and mother church of the Roman Catholic Order of Preachers, better known as the Dominicans. Santa Sabina is perched high above the Tiber river to the North and the Circus Maximus to the East. This is the oldest existing Roman basilica in the eternal city that preserves its original colonnaded rectangular plan and architectural style. Its decorations have been restored to their original restrained design. Together with the light pouring in from the windows, this makes the Santa Sabina an airy and roomy place. Santa Sabina represents the crossover from a roofed Roman forum to the churches of Christendom.
