Walking through the maze of Venetian narrow alleys is a fascinating experience if you want to find out "secret" places, far away from the most common touristy tracks. Here is the huge church of the Saints Giovanni e Paolo. It is dedicated to John and Paul, not the Biblical Apostles of the same names, but two obscure martyrs of the Early Christian church in Rome, whose names were recorded in the 3rd century but whose legend is of a later date.
The stern interior preserves the funeral monuments of men that were "legends" of Venetian history. During the Republic the solemn funeral ceremonies of all state authorities were celebrated here. The Basilica di San Giovanni e Paolo, known in the Venetian dialect as San Zanipolo, is one of the largest churches in the city, it has the status of a minor basilica.
After the 15th century the funeral services of all of Venice's doges were held here, and twenty-five doges are buried in the church. The imposing mass of the basilica overlooks the so called "square of wonders", this due to the beautiful monuments such as the Scuola di San Marco and the Equestrian Monument to Bartolomeo Colleoni. Passing by the Arsenal one can still sense the military and maritime muscle that made Venice a great power. less >>
