This tour includes a visit to the synagogue and to the museum where ceremonial objects and photos of Jewish life in Florence are displayed. Among the objects: late 18th century circumcision instruments, some shaddajm (cradle medallions), a basin from 1662 for the ritual breaking of the drinking glass during the marriage service, a yad decorated with precious stones, to read the Sefer Torah, the rimmonim (ferrules to decorate the Torah) with coral decorations. We will also visit the Museum of San Marco, where fragments with Hebrew inscriptions from the ghetto are displayed.
To more fully appreciate the influence of the Jewish community on the cultural life of Florence you can see on your own time the donations made by prominent Jews to some of the most important art collections in town. The Bargello Museum has a rich collection of fabrics, donated by Baron Franchetti in the late 19th century. The Galleria d'Arte Moderna in the Pitti Palace hosts the Leone Ambron's donation of paintings by the Macchiaioli School of painters (Signorini, Fattori, and many more). less >>
