Departing from your hotel in Florence, your driver will take you to the enchanting city of Orvieto on the border of Lazio. Its commanding position on a great square rock, a thousand feet above the valley, makes it an amazing site, visible from miles around. Here you will have time to walk around and visit the major attractions of this charming little walled hill town. The Glorious Gothic-style Duomo (cathedral) is one of the most beautiful churches in Italy, due to its splendid and decorative façade, façade adorned with elaborate sculptures and colored mosaics designed by Lorenzo Maitani of Siena. Inside you can find the magnificent frescoes of Fra Angelico and Luca Signorelli. Other monuments to see are: the Palazzo Vescovile, Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, the churches of Sant'Andrea and San Giovenale.
There are many good places to eat in Orvieto and your driver will be able to recommend a restaurant where you can taste the local cuisine as well as the wonderful wine that is produced in this area. Orvieto is famous for its white wine, although red wine is also produced here.
About a 30 minute drive from Orvieto will bring you to a very unique place called Civita di Bagnoregio. Also called the “dying city” for the fact that the terrain around this town has been gradually eroding in such a way as to have completely isolated it. Bagnoregio is accessible now only by a long and very high pedestrian bridge. Founded by the Etruscans more than 2500 years ago, the town is lovingly and carefully restored and although it has very few inhabitants, it has several shops and places to eat. Civita di Bagnoregio is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
At the end of the day, your driver will bring you comfortably back to your accommodation in Florence. less >>
