Make the most of your travelling time and visit the town of Verona when transferring between Venice and Milan.

Verona is a lovely place to see at any time of the year and is rich in architectural and artistic sights.

Founded by the Euganei around the 5th century BC, Verona became an important center during the Roman Imperial period and it is in this period that the famous arena of Verona was built in the 1st century AD.

There are many other Roman buildings that you will see here today including a Roman theater still used to today for summer theatrical events, the Stone Bridge, the Gavi Arch which is famous because it has the name of the architect carved upon it – “Lucius Vitruvius Cordone”, a very rare case for architecture of that period.  Originally this arch straddled the main Roman road into the city, but it was later moved.  It was demolished by the French in 1805 and rebuilt in 1932.  Nearby you can admire the Borsari Gate, an archway at the end of the Corso Porta Borsari.  This gate is set in the 3rd century AD Roman walls and is on the ancient Roman “Sacred Way”.

Make sure you make a stop to see the Porta Leoni, the 1st century BC ruin of part of the Roman city gate.  Part of it has been incorporated in the wall of a medieval building.  This whole street is an archeological site and you will see part of an original Roman street and the gate foundations below the present street level.  There is a small courtyard and guard towers from which carriages and travelers had to pass and be inspected before entering or leaving Verona.

Verona also abounds with medieval architecture.  Stop in the Piazza Bra, one of the largest squares in Europe, to admire the numerous palaces once belonging to Verona’s Noble families.  Enjoy a snack or lunch at one of the cafés here or in the Piazza della Arena while people watching.  There is a good shopping street in Verona and if you follow this from the Arena Square to the very bottom and then turn right, you will arrive at one of Verona’s world famous monuments – Juliet’s house.  Although there is nothing spectacularly beautiful or even authentic about this place, it is worth a stop just to admire the balcony (early 20th century) and read the thousands of love letters left on the walls.

Very close by is the beautiful Piazza delle Erbe, the oldest square in Verona and built on the Roman Forum.  The oldest monument in the square is the fountain with the raised statue “Madonna Verona”.  This is in fact a Roman statue and dates from the year 380 AD.

After your three hour visit of Verona, your driver will continue your transfer to your destination of either Venice or Milan.
