The Venetian Lagoon is one of the largest and most important wetland areas in Europe, placed here and there by some 30 islands.

Originally a humble village, this island gained importance in the 16 th century, when it became a centre for lace-making. Torcello, once the most important settlement in the Lagoon, is today an almost deserted island. The main square is surrounded by imposing monuments that testify its former splendour. The Byzantine Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the oldest existing Venetian monument.
