The Venetian Lagoon is one of the largest and most important wetland areas in Europe, placed here and there by some 30 islands.

The three most visited islands are Murano, Burano and Torcello, each with its own unique appeal. In 1291 the Venetian Senate decreed all the glass furnaces to move to Murano that became the capital of the art of glass-making, famous all around the world. Situated some 9 kilometres from Venice , Burano looks completely different from the other islands: there are uniform ranks of houses all the same height and all painted in bright colours. Originally a humble village, this island gained importance in the 16 th century, when it became a centre for lace-making. Torcello, once the most important settlement in the Lagoon, is today an almost deserted island. The main square is surrounded by imposing monuments that testify its former splendour. The Byzantine Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the oldest existing Venetian monument.

A boat trip in the Lagoon is one of the most fascinating and enjoyable experiences you can have in Venice. Starting from your hotel enjoy a relaxing private boat tour on a luxurious motor-launch. Visit Murano which is the most famous of the Venetian Islands , and the most visited courtesy of the famous glass-works that produce the popular "Murano Glass". The people of Venice have been making crystal and glass since the 10th Century, when the Venetian merchants brought back the secrets of production from the East. You'll visit a famous glass-factory where you'll see an example of glass-blowing as well as visit the factories showroom full of beautiful glassware that exemplify the high quality of glass produced on the Island.

Fans of Glass should also plan a visit to the Glass Museum of Murano where you can see exquisite pieces and understand more about the process and history of glass-making in Venice . You should also consider the nearby Church of San Mary & Donato which boasts a magnificent mosaic pavement laid-down in the 12th Century. The Island of Burano is the most picturesque of Venetian Island of the Lagoon. Famous for its lace-making industry, the pretty fishing village has its streets and canals lined by pastel coloured houses. Here you can also see examples of the famous local craft of lace-making while strolling around this enchanting island. Last Island Torcello with its old Cathedral and its atmosphere of remote Venetian past. T
