Tivoli, known in the past as Tibur, was a strategic point on an ancient route from the east to Rome; today it is largely associated with two famous villas, Villa Adriana (Hadrian's Villa) and Villa D'Este. At the foot of the Tiburtini hills, which dominate the vast quarries of travertine marble and host the springs that bring the sulfurous waters to the spa town of Bagni di Tivoli , you can stop to visit the Villa Adriana. The ruins can only hint at the grandeur and beauty of this Villa which the Emperor Hadrian had built to remind him of the monuments and sites he had admired during his travels in the East. Then you carry on your journey to the Villa D'Este. This wonderful villa was built in 1550 for Cardinal Ippolito D'Este, son of the infamous Lucrezia Borgia. It is one of the most beautiful residences of the Renaissance. The Villa's countless fountains and mazes, set in the heart of magnificent Italian style gardens, create a delightfully graceful symphony of carved stone, shade, sunlight and water. Your driver will be pleased to suggest some nice local trattorias where you can stop for an optional lunch and enjoy traditional Italian cuisine. After that driving directly to the city center of Rome, you'll spend the rest of your time, having a panoramic drive exploring the most important highlights of the Eternal city: Piazza Venezia - Roman Forum - Colosseum - Mouth of Truth - Circus Maximus - Palatine Hill - Baths of Caracalla - Pantheon - Trevi Fountain - Spanish Steps - Capitol Hill - Piazza del Popolo - Vatican City (St. Peter's Basilica - Vatican Museum - Sistine Chapel) and other sites you may be interested in. In the afternoon, drive back to Civitavecchia.
